What’s going on with my Orange Live e-mail service? (with UPDATE)

UPDATE: We believe this issue has been resolved thanks to our techie Dave. We’ll know for sure with tomorrow morning’s mailing.

For the past two days, subscribers to our FREE daily e-mail blast have been asking, “What’s going on with my Orange Live e-mail service?”

When they open the e-mail, which normally contains links to current stories on Orange Live, they see this instead …

Screen Shot 2016-03-26 at 4.39.47 PM

Not only is this embarrassing for us, since there is plenty of content to share, and obviously frustrating for readers.

The Mail Chimp service does not offer customer service help unless you pay for a premium upgrade (and answers don’t come easily). Since Orange Live may as well be a non-profit organization we don’t have money to throw around and have to trouble shoot this problem on our own.

In the meantime we ask for your patience, and until the problem is resolved, please log onto Orange Live manually each day for your local news (NOT out-of-town news disguised as hometown information) as part of your morning routine.

Thank You for understanding and for your continued dedication to Our site.

She was the wife of the late Donald McDonald. She was born Feb. 9, 1924 in West New York, N.J., daughter of the late Charles and Frederica Albert. She worked as an executive secretary in Manhattan until 1951 when she married and moved to New Haven.

She and her husband moved to Orange in 1955. Later, she worked as a dental assistant in New Haven.

Marion is survived by her daughter, Patricia Villers and her husband, Ralph Villers of Ansonia; her two cherished grandchildren, Allegra Villers and Cameron Villers; and her longtime companion Robert C. Pollack. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, William Albert.

Marion was truly a caregiver at heart. If anyone she loved didn’t feel well, she would go into high gear to nurse them back to health. Marion always enjoyed working with children. She taught a Sunday School nursery class for more than a dozen years at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Orange, and she was an assistant Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

Marion will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was smart, stubborn, and full of all good things. Her family will always remember her favorite expression, “There’s always something.” It’s hard to disagree with that.

Friends may call Sunday from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby.

Her funeral service will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Orange Center Cemetery.

The family requests contributions in Marion’s memory be made to Seymour Pink, Inc., P.O. Box 333, Seymour, CT., 06483, or the Center for Disability Rights, 369 Highland St., West Haven, CT., 06516.

10687029_882465481772430_5111323056979851469_nIn May, 2012, I posted the following message on this website as a way of introducing myself to new readers:

My name is Terri Miles, I’ve been covering the Town of Orange for about 15 years, first with the Amity Observer and then for an online news site. I was moved to start my own site because of a strong desire to give Orange residents what they want and deserve, a 24/7 news site without fillers, regional stories or blogs. Just news and events from YOUR town and your children’s High School. Why? Because I know you and I care. A relative financed the domain name and other little details for me so I wouldn’t go stir crazy after departing from my last job.

Orange Live has been online for four years, offering Orange residents news from their town and Amity High School, which is attended by the majority of Orange students.

Since Orange Live has been up, it’s rare that I’ve wavered from the promise to be your exclusive Orange news site (with news from Amity High School). Of the 6,419 stories published, there have been 10-13 out-of-town stories ONLY because they are high profile and likely affect everyone in some way. (The Maren Sanchez murder, Kevin Brennan suspension, food and product recalls)

Screen-shot-2012-06-26-at-12.42.34-PMOrange Live has stuck to its political policy although some politicians choose to challenge me on it — you will see more of that in the coming months.

Our advertising rates have remained the most reasonable in the area of any medium and those who choose to advertise see results and appreciate the hands-on service, and not having to go through several departments to get what they want.

If someone has a concern I look into it and get answers as fast as possible.

Missing animals are a big draw to Orange Live, for example, Piggy went missing on July 27, 2014 and was home by July 30.

One thing that can’t be disputed is my record for helping people who’ve lost a pet. It always feels good when a family lets me know that their beloved dog or cat is back home. So many residents are aware of my dedication to dogs that when Lacey or Jack runs away their owners send me a personal e-mail and give me the details. I get the word out as soon as possible and stay on it until I know he or she is safely at home again. Orange residents are the best when it comes to rallying around someone who needs help.

After four years, it’s still amazing to me that some people aren’t aware that Orange Live is really a one-person operation. I take the photos, cover the sports, plays, events, meetings, general news, write all the stories, update the site with an average of 5 new stories per day while keeping the Facebook and Twitter pages up-to-date, answering e-mails and phone calls and designing the ads for the page.

On occasion you will see the words “we” and “our” when I refer to Orange Live. So If I am the only one doing the work, then how can “I” be a “we”?

The WE is my brother Ron who legally owns Orange Live. He financed it in order to give me an outlet to give Orange residents the type of news site they deserve. I often discuss things that go on the site with him so, the “I” becomes a “we” and the “my” becomes an “our.”

So on this, our 4 year anniversary, I promise to continue dedicating my time to Orange Live. As many of you know, here is a young lady (my granddaughter) who takes up several hours of my time each week (I’m one of the Lucky Yia Yia’s that gets to spend time with her grandchild) and you will notice a lull in the activity on the site when I’m with her, but it picks up as soon as I leave her house.

In the following year I hope to see continued growth in popularity and to be everyone’s go-to place for news. I have a lot of luck with getting information from teachers at the High School, yet the elementary and middle schools are still depending on other sources for publicity. The Orange Lions, Recycling Committee, Senior Center and other organizations have been awesome, and the Rotary Club began sending press releases after our third anniversary.

You need to know, I am here for you, and if you give me a couple days notice I most likely will be able to come and cover your event and the numbers prove, more people will see it on Orange Live than any other “local” media.

I have some wonderful advertisers who realize that their Ad on Orange Live works, still,  I have yet to make a profit from the site. WHY? for the first year, my brother financed not only the site, but also helped me with my personal bills, mortgage, utilities, etc. and whatever money that comes in goes into a the Live bank account until we are satisfied that I’ve paid him back.

Some of the funds have gone to necessary business items such as, promotional materials, computer equipment, camera lenses etc. but the rest goes to paying back my brother for his generous help.

So, if I’m not getting paid then whey do I stand out in the cold and photograph an entire football game, or in the sweltering heat day after day covering the firemen’s carnival or American Legion Baseball games? — That’s easy, because I made a promise to you when I opened the site, and knowing that I’m staying true to that every day is what drives me.

Click the links above and follow us on Facebook and Twitterbookmark this page and come back every day for current news from the town of Orange.

I would like to thank all of the faithful readers who’ve been with Orange Live since day 1 and to Jim Kaoud from Kaoud Oriental Rugs for his faithful support as an advertiser since we went LIVE.
