Marian Grant Reid of Orange, passed away after a long illness on March 22, 2024.
Born on April 12, 1929, in Roanoke, Virginia, Marian (“Mickey”) was predeceased by her husband Robert J Reid, daughter Cynthia Anne Reid Mihalik, grandson Joseph Theo Smith, as well as her parents George and Madeline Grant.
She is survived by her loving family – daughters Laura (Peach) Reid, Nancy G. Nastri (James) and Heather E. Reid; grandchildren Shaun Fettes (Kaitlyn), Casey Fettes, Anthony Nastri (Danielle), Christina Nastri (Dan Shine), Jennifer Hirshorn (Greg), and John Mihalik (April); great-grandchildren Olivia Nastri, Madelyn Nastri, Ella Fettes and Jordan Mihalik.The family would also like to extend their profound thanks to Ellen Torto, who cared so lovingly with dedication for Marian these past three years. Also grateful thanks to Compassus staff and nurses for their compassionate care.
Mickey made many contributions and had many accomplishments during her lifetime.
A long-time Orange Town Pool employee, Mickey was the recipient of the American Red Cross Health Services Director’s Award for Exceptional Volunteer Service and was honored for her work in the Water Safety Instructor Program, the CPR Instructor Training Program, and the First Aid Instruction Program.
Literally many thousands of Orange children, over some 50 years and beyond, learned how to swim thanks to Mickey Reid. She also ran adult Aquatic Exercise classes. Additionally, many others, including teachers, were taught both CPR and First Aid by Mickey.
Mickey was very involved with the Church of the Good Shepherd. She served on the Vestry, and the Alter Guild, sang in the choir, helped run the Shepherd’s Table, and was a Liturgical Assistant.
A long-time member of the ORTC (Orange Republican Town Committee), she served as Secretary and delegate to many local, state, and national conventions, was a poll worker, and was President of the Orange Republican Women’s Club, she was also a Justice of the Peace.
Other volunteer activities Mickey enjoyed include serving on the boards of the Orange Visiting Nurses Association, Orange Park and Recreation, and OGAT (Orange Government Access Television). For many years, she also worked at both the Orange Firemen’s Carnival and the Orange Country Fair.
Mickey loved attending her grandchildren’s activities, be they a sport, dance, play, or choir. She loved birdwatching and traveling, having been to Costa Rica, Kenya, Tanzania, England, Germany, Italy, and many national parks.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
