John “Jack” Barton Jr., 90, beloved husband of the late Shirley Barton, passed away on May 26, 2024. Born on July 8, 1933, in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late John M. Barton Sr. and Gertrude Barton.
Jack owned and operated the Barton & Barton Insurance Agency for over fifty years, retiring at age 80.
Jack’s passion for sports and community involvement was evident throughout his life. He was inducted into the Trinity College Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982 and served as president of the Orange Little League in 1976. Additionally, he was an assistant coach for the Amity Basketball team and was inducted into the Amity Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
He was a lifelong Detroit Tiger fan who traveled religiously to their spring training. His contributions to local sports were a testament to his dedication and love for nurturing young talent.
Beyond his sports involvement,
Jack was deeply engaged in various community organizations. He served as chairman of the Amity Board of Education from 1983 to 1987. He was a member of the Orange Rotary Club, serving as president for a year, a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Paul Harris Society. His leadership extended to the Town of Orange Police Commission, where he served as chairman until 2024. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to the community, he received the Town of Orange Living Treasure Award in 2010.
Jack was also a devoted churchgoer and lifetime parishioner of the Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served as a senior warden. His faith and commitment to his church community were central to his life, providing him strength and solace.
His two beloved sons survive Jack: John M. Barton III and James Barton. He is also survived by his loving partner for the last twenty years, Ms. Lee Schlesinger. He is also beloved by his extended family of John’s partner, Maura Harrigan, her daughters, G.G. and Ana, their husbands Derek and Jeff, Lee’s daughter, Sarah Pollack, her husband Ross, and daughter, Marian, and Lee’s son, Ian Schlesinger and his children, Coren and Eva. In addition to his late wife, Jack was predeceased by his sister, Virginia Porter, and brother, Charles Barton.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 680 Racebrook Road, Orange. Interment will be held privately by the family.
