Mildred Burtnett, 101, of Orange, and formerly of Clark, NJ, Ocala, FL, North Huntingdon and White Oak, PA, passed away on February 24, 2016, at CT Hospice in Branford.
Born in McKeesport, PA, in 1914, to Walter and Mary (Volk) Schoeller, Mildred attended Bryn Mawr and McKeesport Public Schools and graduated from Slippery Rock University with a teaching certificate. She taught elementary school children in Lincoln and White Oak schools for almost 30 years.
After retiring, Mildred was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels; RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), WPS (Widowed Persons Service), The Intergenerational Literacy Program, Greenbriar Nursing Home and the Peck Place Elementary School Library.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Burtnett of East McKeesport, PA to whom she was married for over 50 years. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Irwin Turner of Clark, NJ; and sister, Erma Davis of Sidney, OH.
All of her life Mildred was involved in church activities and was especially known for the children and adult Sunday school (the Faithful Few) classes that she taught, as well as serving as a Deaconess at the Bryn Mawr (PA) Church of Christ.
She was a parishioner at the Orange Congregational Church in Orange, CT. Mildred enjoyed gardening, cooking, golfing and needlework and will be fondly remembered by her family for the 35 years that she brought her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren together for a week long reunion each summer to the New Jersey shore.
She will always be cherished for the close and lasting friendships that she made throughout her life and as a kind and generous person who never forgot a birthday or anniversary.
She is survived by her children, Thomas W. Burtnett and his wife, Nancy of Stirling, NJ, Richard A. Burtnett and his wife, Doe (Marjory) of North Huntingdon, PA, Mary Anne Davis and her husband, Daniel of Orange; and her sister, Elizabeth Karp of Edinboro, PA. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Heidi Davis and husband, Danny, Heather McCullough and husband, Rich, Richard Burtnett and wife, Amy, Leslie Fox and husband, Michael, Holly Asaro and fiancé, Joe Morgan, Emily Cullen, Russell Davis, Jeremy Davis, Natalie Davis and Douglas Davis. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, Danielle, Marisa, Matthew, Brody, Anna, Cole, Abby, RJ, Abigail, Ella, Leah, Melia, Evelyn and Wesley.
Remembrances may be made in Mildred’s name to the Bryn Mawr Church of Christ, 2901 State Street, White Oak, PA 15131.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29, 2016, at STRIFFLERS OF WHITE OAK CREMATION AND MORTUARY SERVICES, 1100 Lincoln Way, 15131 (412-678-6177) where service will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Charles Owston officiating. Burial will follow.
